Biography

Hiroko Murayama is a photographer based in Japan, dividing her time between a quiet natural environment and the urban pulse of Tokyo. This duality of "silence and stimulation" deeply informs her visual language. Her practice bridges the discipline of commercial photography—specializing in portraiture and still life—with a personal artistic inquiry. Weaving together both analogue and digital approaches, she explores universal themes of identity, belonging, and the intimate landscapes of family. Her notable works include The Linden Garden (2016), a medium-format series tracing family memory, and Me As A Mother and Myself, which examines the boundaries of selfhood and received an Honorable Mention at the Tokyo International Foto Awards (TIFA) in 2022. Currently, she is working on His Own Antlers, a collaborative project with her neurodiverse son that redefines perceptions of ability and connection.
